Abstract:

The growing population in large urban centers, together with the lack of physical space, has led to the construction of taller and slender buildings. Structures with multiple floors bring great challenges to Civil Engineering, requiring specific conditions of design, construction and use. More directly related to structural analysis, the increase in the number of floors leads to an increase in the horizontal actions’ effects. In these structures, as they are susceptible to large displacements due to such actions, a bracing scheme is commonly adopted, whose main function is to provide stability to the structural system. In addition, with the use of more resistant materials and new construction techniques, there is a need to improve the methodologies adopted in structural analysis, seeking to offer professionals in the field conditions to carry out safer and more economical projects with greater speed and efficiency. In this sense, this work presents the numerical analyzes of steel frames structures in order to evaluate their stability and strength when bracing systems are considered. During the study, the influence of some parameters of the reinforcement systems is investigated, such as: the type of connection with the other members of the structure, the properties of the cross section, the position and arrangement of the bars, in addition to their effectiveness in terms of variation in the intensity of lateral loads. Static analyses are performed via MASTAN2 software. Nonlinear finite element formulations that consider two nonlinearity sources, geometric and physical, are adopted. Through the studies carried out, it was observed that the bracing systems had a significant influence on all analyzed structures, providing an increase in stiffness and, consequently, a reduction in lateral dislocation. Other conclusions and observations regarding the structural behavior of each investigated structure and directly related to the performed analyzes are established as well.
