Abstract:

The concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) systems have become a new solution for steel-concrete association in buildings since the beginning of the 20th century. The combination of steel profiles filled with concrete, composing pillars, is a way of enhancing the advantages of the two materials by combining their technical and structural advantages. However, to verify these benefits, a close steel-concrete interaction is necessary in order to ensure the transfer of loadings and the compatibility of deformations. Thus, this study analyses the adhesion and confinement effects in mixed sections composed of thin-walled tubular steel profiles filled with three different types of concrete: lightweight without any admixture (used as reference), lightweight with expansive agent, and lightweight with air-entraining admixture. For this purpose, 12 prototypes were made using thin steel profiles, with an external diameter of 100 mm and a thickness of 2 mm, filled with lightweight concretes manufactured with Brazilian expanded clay. Initially, the specimens investigated regarding the behavior of their filling cores during the curing period, aiming to verify the performance of concretes in relation to expansion / contraction during the specified time. In addition, the following tests were performed: shear tests; optical microscopy at the sections’ interfaces; compressive strength with load applied to the concrete core and the mixed section; and physical characterization of concrete produced. From the results, it was verified that the expansion generated by the expansive concrete during its hardening period induces a pre-effect of confinement in the walls of the steel tube, providing improvement of the adhesion at the interface and good performance of the prototypes when submitted to the axial loads. As for the concrete with entrained air, it was verified that its smaller modulus of elasticity and its surface irregularities contributed to the appearance of increased mechanical and frictional adhesion and to a high degree of confinement.
