Abstract:

Among the several factors that interfere in the thermal performance of buildings, soil temperature is not always considered in the thermal performance evaluations. However, the soil temperature is a factor that influences the final result of the environments heat exchanges, mainly in earth sheltered buildings. In this way, it is necessary to evaluate this influence due to the interaction of the soil with the buildings walls and floors, since the heat transfer through these elements has a significant extension in the total thermal load of a building. In addition, due to the three-dimensional and transient character of the heat exchange processes involving the ground, the numerical approach becomes an important tool in the analysis of buildings thermal performance. In this context, EnergyPlus appears as an alternative to obtain such results, mainly through the Basement preprocessor. Take these into consideration, this work evaluates the results provided by the simulations carried out in the EnergyPlus program, taking account the effect of the heat transfer process through the floor and underground walls in a residence. The analysis of the modeling alternatives in the program showed that the Basement preprocessor works correctly and presents a more sophisticated formulation that, among the simulation options found in EnergyPlus, generates temperature values of the floor/walls and soil interface more precisely. The results also indicated that, for an unconditioned basement, the use of other modeling alternatives, in place of the Basement, generates a great difference in the results found for a basement internal temperature, reaching a maximum value of 1,9ºC, in the summer , and 1,4°C, in winter. It was also verified the influence of some parameters on the final results of a thermal performance from the variation of some input data. The results of these analyzes indicated that the variation of the soil thermophysical properties is able to alter the internal temperature of the environment up to 0,4ºC. Besides, the insulation material of the underground environment walls and floors was able to keep the internal ambient temperature higher up to 0,5ºC in relation to the external environment.
